MODIFICATION AND STRENGTHENING OF A PRIMARY RO-RO PONTOON - STRUCTURAL STEEL, ON-SITE FABRICATION.

With the planned arrival of a new larger vessel, Mann Lines required the main ro-ro pontoon at their commercial port to be extended. Appropriate modifications were required to cope with the increase in weight and size of the 40,000t vessel and the environmental conditions in which it was to be used.

Using a selection of lifting equipment, including a 1,000t crane and roto telehandler, and our own on-site welders, sheet steel was used to extend the length of the pontoon and create an increased platform size. Steel support brackets were added where necessary and cross-bracing was welded internally to provide structural support. This work required a skilled team with confined space training. Extra ballast was added for increased stability during loading. Whilst on site, Red Leaf Group were able to provide further assistance by installing new mooring bollards to the dockside and pontoon plus additional safety railings and lighting where needed.

All work was undertaken to the highest specification to withstand the demands of heavy use, sea and weather conditions associated with the dockside environment. The new pontoon fulfilled the client’s requirements and successfully allowed for the docking and unloading of the new vessel.
