On a Balfour Beatty development in Tower Bridge, London, the two-storey basement of an existing building needed shoring so demolition and then construction of a new tower block could take place. The site’s location and project specifications presented unique logistical and design considerations due to the proximity of the River Thames and the presence of an archaeological structure.
Red Leaf Group was appointed by Kennedy Contractors Ltd as the main contractor for the fabrication and installation of the necessary supporting props and beams. This temporary propping system was a bespoke design, engineered to fit all of the criteria required of this specific project. Access into the basement was a particular constraint, being limited to a 3m opening at ground level. To overcome this, the design needed to allow for a certain degree of assembly once inside.
Using our specialist lifting experience and equipment, a total of 230t of fabricated steel was delivered, unloaded and lowered into the basement by Red Leaf Group through the 3m opening. Hydraulic jacks, spider cranes and heavy-duty skates were used to move the materials to their locations and lift them in to place at heights of 6 metres. With an average prop and beam length of 8 metres and weighing over 3t a section, specialist lifting frames and winches were installed for efficient, safe lifting. A range of 35mm to 42mm bolts, stud work, chemical fixing and on-site welding were used for the connection detail. For the installation process, diamond drilling was also required, with 8,000 holes drilled, at a depth of 400mm.
We contracted Red Leaf Group to undertake the design and build of a temporary propping system of a £100,000,000 project. They were on time and well within budget. We found them to excel in their day-to-day projects and tasks. I have no hesitation recommending them.
